Day 2
Visit to Marrakech
Free day. Discover Marrakech, the “Ochre City” or “Pearl of the South”, founded in the 11th century under the Almoravid dynasty. With more than ten centuries of existence and a unique charm, imperial Marrakech has built up a rich heritage — an invaluable treasure of history, architecture and culture — while developing a wide range of activities and excursions through splendid landscapes bathed in dazzling colours and light, from the valleys and plateaus at the foot of the High Atlas.
In the heart of the city, depending on your interests, visitors can choose from a wonderful selection of sites: the Bahia Palace, the Agdal and Menara gardens, the necropolis with the Saadian Tombs (dating from the 16th century), the tanners' and dyers' quarters, the Tinsmiths' Square and many other sites.
In the afternoon, a must is to immerse yourself in the medina and soak up the enchanting atmosphere of its narrow alleys. A scent of exotic essences floats in the air among the many shops with colourful fronts. On the edge of the medina, in the cool of the evening, you will not be able to resist the call of the legendary Jemaa El Fna square — a UNESCO World Heritage site — which has become a permanent open-air stage. Here, in a unique atmosphere, performers display their talents: musicians, dancers, acrobats, fire-eaters, storytellers, fortune-tellers, local griots, snake charmers, monkey trainers and countless other artists — alongside vendors of every kind. Across the square, you will also find food stalls offering a variety of dishes, as well as vendors preparing fresh juices and fruit cocktails.
